2003 Year End Reflections

Contributed by Frank Ryan

Dear Friends,

As we close out another eventful year, I thought I would take a few lines to outline some of the initiatives in which the CIVIC has taken a leadership role this past year and where some of our efforts will be directed in 2004. We appreciate all the hard work our Board and Civic members have done in striving to find solutions and continuing to introduce new initiatives that we believe will continue to improve our already fine quality of life.

MEMBERSHIP / EVENT SPONSORSHIP

Our efforts all begin with YOU our members taking an active role in participating with one or more of our many endeavors. We currently have approximately 440 families enrolled in our association. Our goal this year is 500 members. Our strength is in numbers. When you come to our monthly meetings won’t you consider bringing a friend? We believe there is an activity tailored made to meet your interest and expertise. Would you please review the enclosed list and consider dedicating some time and giving something back to our community. The pay ain’t great but the dividends are outstanding, because through your participation you will be making a difference. We ask all our Board to minimally give an hour a week to the CIVIC, all give much more than that –won’t you?

BEACH / ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE

CHILDREN’S DAY & CLAM BAKE- for over 70 years the CIVIC has been sponsoring this day in the sun on our Labor Day Weekend. We are always looking on how we can make this event even better. Have some ideas? Let us know.

EARTH DAY/ BEACH CLEAN UPS - our efforts have gone a long way to improving our beach / ballfield by planting and restoring our dunes. We also have had good (not great participation) in our beach cleanups. Have you participated? We sponsored three this year. Let us know if you like to volunteer; our next Earth Day Event is in April.

FEDERAL / STATE / TOWN PROJECTS – we have a number of initiatives effecting our beach/ ballfield with respects to dredging, nourishment, water quality, infrastructure improvements, public access etc. Don’t stand on the sidelines- get involved!! We need your input. If you want to know more about these projects check us out.

WATER QUALITY - the CIVIC has formed a sub-committee to review any/ all aspects of our drinking water. Is it safe? How are our water mains and connections? Interested? Come to our General Meetings and find out.

CIVIC COMMITTEE

STREETSCAPES / TRAFFIC CALMING - As we move forward with these initiatives to improve our main thoroughfare, won’t you consider lending your thoughts and participation on how this should be accomplished? We believe in 15 M.P.H., yet how do ensure greater compliance with parking, speeding? More electronic signs? More Police presence? Do we need Parking Stickers? What are your suggestions?
Be part of the solution.

PROPERTY TAXES - the CIVIC continues to explore ways to find solutions to this unconscionable situation. Thanks to our efforts many of our members have joined the fight to challenge what we believe is the blatant violation of Section 1805 Real Property Tax Law which prohibits an increase in assessment of Class I Property by more than 6% in any one year and no more than 20% over a five year period. We will continue to have at our General Meetings our elected representatives, school superintendent/school board representatives and legal experts until we get our arms around this issue and begin to bring about a more equitable distribution. We will be planning some petitions campaigns and organizing our community to take our case directly to our elected representatives. We need your voice and presence to be effective. Our strength is in our numbers –get involved!

HISTORICAL / BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE

We believe in keeping our rich history alive. Our Historic Calendar, Art Show, July 4th Parade, Heritage Day, the Halloween Parade, Welcome to Summer Event are just a sampling of activities we actively sponsor or join with our other fine organizations in supporting. Have an interest?

Do you know we have a magnificent historical meeting room in the Old Fire House? If you believe you have a worthy artifact for our archives, we would be happy to see it, so let us know!

ZONING COMMITTEE

We are always looking for “Zoning Cops” We have had the Town of Hempstead Officials from the Building Dept at our General Meeting to be more stringent regarding code and building violations. We are always in need of individuals willing to go to Town Board to voice the CIVIC’S concern if there is a blatant violation transpiring within our community. Call me if you believe there is a zoning issue out there. We will check it out and do our best to get it resolved.

GENERAL MEETINGS / COMMUNICATION

Our General Meetings take place monthly (approx 10 per year) on Thursday nights at the Rec Hall beginning at 8’o’clock. We traditionally have an outside speaker usually but not limited to our elected representatives or an expert on a particular topic. Do you have an idea for a speaker? Come down and let’s us know.

You may find out what’s going on with the CIVIC from several different venues. The Bulletin Board at the Post Office (and the BEACH during the summer), the fine publication the COMMUNITY OUTLOOK, on the web- site www.MYPOINTLOOKOUT.COM and from our 20 BOARD MEMBERS who represent some of the best and brightest people the Point has to offer.

WORKING PARTNERSHIPS

As President of the Point Lookout Civic Association, I’m proud that we have the opportunity to work with the other fine organizations in town. The Point Lookout Fire Department, Our Chamber of Commerce, the Village Gardiner’s, the Point Lookout Little League, Young Life, Our Community Church, Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church, our Fishing Club, the Over 50 Club, our wonderful business’s and our local government partners all who contribute immeasurably in making this place – our home a true “slice of heaven.”

On behalf of the Board of the Point Lookout Civic Association and all our fine members, may we wish you all the very best for this holiday season and the best of health and happiness for 2004. Thanks for your continued support and assistance.

Respectfully submitted,
Francis X. Ryan
