HURRICANE
ISABEL
While the gods smiled on our lovely hamlet and spared us the full
wrath of Hurricane Isabel, clear remnants of this near
"Event" were evident on Civic Beach. The mighty Atlantic
at the height of the storm forced the tidal surge to within feet
of our Boardwalk; large chunks of Middle Beach were gouged out
with the ocean breeching the berm and touching our main dune line.
There is a
clear need for some definitive plan of action now to shore up our
Civic Beach while we "wait" for the Federal Storm
Protection Project which is still years away. The Civic will be
meeting with our Town of Hempstead Officials to see what can be
done as an interim step. We all recognize our most precious
resource (outside of our family) is our beach. The Town of
Hempstead needs to commence replenishment and renourish effort now
before it's too late.
CANDIDATES NIGHT- October 16th
Our Annual
Candidates Night will be taking place on Thursday, October 16th at
8:00 p.m. in the Rec Hall. Invitations have been extended to the
major party officials and candidates for Town Supervisor, Town
Council, County Legislator and County Assessor. Are you satisfied
with our current representatives? Or do you believe a change is
warranted? Come and ask our incumbent officials and candidates
what their plan will be for our Beach, Streetscapes, Water Quality
and the all important issue of our Property Taxes.
Our
strength as a community is in numbers if you care about what our
future will be with these and other essential issues you will
circle this date and participate actively on assessing how these
individuals respond to our needs.
CHILDREN'S DAY - 2003
In continuing the tradition, which is now in its 7th decade
another generation of Point Kids rode the wild surf, dug for
hidden treasurer, shot baskets and ran the hearts out to see who
was the fleetest! From sunup to sundown countless volunteers
ensured that no child went away unhappy. There were countless
"Kodak Moments" that will grace scrapbooks and family
videos for years. Rose and Brian Gallagher,
Val and Marty Reidy, Vinny
(The Hulk) Courteri, Beach Chairman, Gerry
Ottavino, Mary Goldberg our
TOH Lifeguards and many civic members assisted immeasurably in
allowing this wonderful tradition to continue to prosper.
Clambake
Ever eat a
lobster or chew on an ear of corn under an umbrella in the pouring
rain? Many hearty souls did just that as the intermittent showers
would not deter our "feast on the beach" from being
cancelled. Val Reidy and Dianna
Posch kept their sense of humor as Mother Nature kept
playing hide & seek with showers to sun and the D.J. kept
playing tunes with a rain theme. Many of our youngsters did there
best Gene Kelly impressions as they danced and sang through the
downpours. This will be a Clam Bake we won't soon forget. We
greatly appreciate all those who demonstrated their patience and
understanding with these unforeseen circumstances.
NEPTUNE CABLE
This was a
historic summer in many ways. Almost half of our summer days and
countless weekends were either rained out or were not true beach
days. No one will forget August 14th the day of the lights went
out. The Blackout reminded us how fragile and sometimes
unpredictable our energy infrastructure is. A proposal to bring
some additional power from New Jersey appears to be heading our
way. An installation of an electrical cable by the Neptune
Regional Transmission System is being considered from Sayreville,
New Jersey to Nassau County via Jones Inlet. The Town of Hempstead
has gone on record while supportive of the need for additional
electrical capacity for the Island has expressed concerns
regarding the path and particularly the depth the proposed cable
would be buried through this major navigational channel. The Point
Civic will be meeting with Neptune in the next few weeks. We will
be reporting our findings at our November meeting. Any interested
parties who wish to attend this meeting should contact Gerry
Ottavino or me.
ZONING MEETING
The Point Civic hosted a special general meeting with the Town of
Hempstead Officials on matters regarding zoning and board
variances. Commisioner Rick Amorini and Ray Schwarz of the TOH
Building Dept. provided an excellent overview regarding the
permit, application and appeal processes residents need to comply
when commencing new construction. They directed individuals to www.townofhempstead.com
web site as an important first step in determining one's needs.
All the TOH Board of Appeal Hearings, guidelines, permits and
applications are available via this resource. They fielded
resident's questions and offered their services if issues or
information is required to troubleshoot an issue. The CIVIC
welcomes this proactive support from the TOH and our hope it's not
just rhetoric. If Point residents have questions regarding any new
construction please contact me with the specific and we will
promptly ask the TOH to investigate.
