Civic News: November/December 2005
Contributed by Herb Abbe, President

I hope that all parties associated with The Community Outlook will look with a forgiving eye as this is my first written news article. I am one of those “old schooled” guys who dictated his message to a secretary who in turn brought the article to paper or perhaps to life. My computer skills and typing in particular are certainly not my forte. I am not ambidextrous and to think creatively and type with two fingers is a challenge.

Allow me to reiterate once more that, I am honored to be your newly elected President and that I want to thank Frank and his team for a job well done.  I am privileged to serve you with a diverse and talented new team of officers and current as well as newly elected board members.

The Civic Association with your help has accomplished much. More needs to be done and together we can and will make a difference. I invite all of you to share your time and talent for the betterment of our Point Lookout. I urge each and everyone to think of how you can and want to help. Your opinions are valued, your suggestions are welcomed and your involvement is crucial. Your critique is mandated by your willingness to step up and make a difference. We may disagree but are united by our concern for our community and won’t let our differences interfere with said concern.

Traffic Calming

Additional 15 mph signs have been placed on Parkside and Freeport Ave. A N.Y. S. traffic study is underway in order to place a pedestrian crossing light across Parkside on the south side of  Lido and across Lido on the west side of  Parkside in the hopes that it will ease the daily burden of our physically challenged friends. I have also asked that the traffic light timing be lengthened in order to make the crossing safer. The tunnel caps on the traffic light  will be replaced with California caps which will make the light color more visible. One way do not enter signs have been posted at Cedarhurst and Beech looking north. A TOH traffic study is underway to place a stop sign at the corner of Freeport and Ocean making it an All Way Stop and at Baldwin and Ocean to reduce speeding. The stop signs at Parkside and Beech as well as Bayside and Hewlett have been replaced with larger 30 inch All Way Stop signs. Some traffic signage has been angled for greater visibility and some that were barely legible have been replaced. One bus stop has been removed by the dry cleaners creating additional 2-3 parking spaces. On Ocean, west of the main entrance, an additional 3 handicapped parking spaces have been created. An electronic speed sign has been added for outbound traffic by the Bay House.

Earth Day

Led by Ed Brown 13 hearty souls replaced 500 ft of dune fencing. Pictures were posted on the bulletin board outside of the post office. Another 600 ft will have been placed by the time you read this article.

Beach Erosion

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of our chairperson, Gerry “Octavius” Ottavino we are being heard. Some temporary measures to reduce the winter storm affects have been erected. Your letters and petitions are making a difference. I trust you have viewed (at the post office) the letters sent to our Senators Clinton and Schumer by our local officials. I hope that you also saw the pictures of the erosion caused by the meeting of Wilma, a North Easter and a Low in the last week of October. Our op ed piece in the Herald was published in the 11/4/05 issue. Hopefully our pictures of the erosion from the above storm along with our email to the Herald on 11/4/05 will have been published by the time you read this.

Candidates Night

Was successful and is long gone. We must hold the victors accountable and keep up the pressure in order to protect our community from the ravages of erosion and taxes.

Halloween

The parade was as always great, the costumes were fantastic and the treats were delightful. The egg throwing marred an otherwise fun event. It must be eradicated and the culprits when caught must be prosecuted. I am sure that you heard about the young man in Queens who lost his eyesight because of a thrown egg. Parents how would you feel if the culprit was your child or worse the victim was yours???  Let us educate our children before it is too late.

Special thanks to the Fire Dept for their assistance during our 10 days of rain (I was building an arc) and The Village Gardeners for their fall and Holiday decorations which were as always exquisite.

Best wishes for the holidays to our members, residents, friends, merchants and all their families. May the New Year be filled with peace, health, happiness and prosperity?

NEXT GENERAL MEETING IS ON January 26TH AT 8 P.M. AT THE REC HALL.

Sincerely,

Herb Abbe - hatu2002@optonline.net
