BEACH OPENS – JUNE 19TH

It’s hard to believe that the Summer of 2004 is upon us. Trust me I yearn for 90 degree days even with high humidity in order to forget this past winter. Once again Ann Ryan will be our Gate Keeper distributing and ensuring that all residents have their beach tags to allow for valid access to your Civic Beach. We will be attempting to bring some law and order to the disorder found in our Chair room. Please try to only store what you believe is absolutely necessary and be neighborly and store your property neatly and in the correct location. IT’S FOR YOUR PROTECTION!!

PARK ISSUES AFTER DARK

Speaking of protection, at our June General Meeting the CIVIC hosted a representative from the Town of Hempstead Public Safety. They echoed what Police Officers from our 4th Precinct have affirmed that they will be vigilant will issue appearance tickets at our community parks AFTER DARK particularly when alcoholic beverages and large groups are involved. Parents please are mindful that our Parks are officially closed after dark. Officers will attempt to use discretion whenever possible but parents please be mindful and educate our young people to be respectful and mindful of these rules and regulations.

EARTH DAY/ BEACH CLEAN UP

In continuing with a tradition which started in the 1960’s, the Point Lookout Civic Association held its first Earth Day of this season. On a beautiful day in April, some 50 of our community’s finest did their part to keep our beaches and ball field clean. Under the leadership of Ed Brown and Gerry Ottavino, we swept through Civic Beach removing old Christmas Trees and countless bottles and cans. It had been noted by many that thanks to events of this nature coupled with a heightened public awareness our beaches and dunes are noticeably cleaner.

Our Red Badge of Courage award this year was presented to Dr. Kevin Cahill. While leading the Cahill Clan on this ecological mission, he demonstrated how one should ramble through the underbrush to remove an old can or plastic wrapper lest it soil our pristine environment. The results of this Herculean effort – a mean case of poison ivy! Dr. Cahill thanks for going the extra yard.

On a rather disconcerting note, is was great to see our Little League Field occupied by young people playing our nation’s favorite pastime yet extremely disappointing that one of the trees planted last summer was apparently rudely chopped down. One has to wonder why someone felt this was an appropriate action- they clearly have a different view of Earth Day than many of us.

CIVIC BEACH SHACK/AMERICAN EAGLE & MEMORIAL BENCHES

As your Civic Beach Shack and Bench Replacing Program near completion we owe a great deal of thanks to the Town of Hempstead & Ron Masters for orchestrating this positive facelift. It is unfortunate that some mindless soul saw fit to remove our American Eagle which was affixed to the top of our beach shack. This cupola and weathervane is dedicated to all those who perished on September 11th. The CIVIC promptly replaced this tribute with a new American Eagle. We still are offering a reward for anyone who can provide information on who pilfered this symbol of our country.

Our Bench Replacement Program has been a resounding success. Over two dozen benches have been sold (with more orders on the way) with part of the proceeds going to the establishment of a scholarship fund. Each year a small stipend will given to a worthy girl and boy who have demonstrated through their actions an important contribution to our community. These awards will be given each year on Children’s Day. For more information regarding our benches or this fund come to our next Welcome to Summer Cocktail Party in July or send me an e-mail at fryan19788@aol.com.

PARKING LETTER/ CURB YOUR DOG

Responding to the concerns expressed by many residents regarding the number of illegally parked cars in our community the CIVIC mailed a letter to each household reminding all of these rules and regulations. We encourage area residents that if they have concerns regarding this issue they should call our 4th precinct by dialing 911 and a patrol car will be dispatched. Our Board Member Chas Thompson who wears so many hats has often stated that these parking rules are designed to protect the safety and well being of all who call the Point their home, please observe them.

Our second missive will be outlining the constant challenge with our feline friends. The CIVIC will be supporting any effort which provides for the enforcement of and adherence to our Town Ordinances governing picking up after your animal and ensuring they are leashed and not interfering with our environment or wild life.

We hope these informational pieces provide some necessary reminders that the reason why our community is beautiful is that most comply with these directives. Our efforts with your assistance are to attempt to get those who may have forgotten.

WELCOME TO SUMMER PARTY- JULY 10TH

We would like to invite all Point Lookout residents (even non CIVIC Members) to our annual welcome to summer cocktail party on July10th. Our goal this year is to increase our membership to 500 families. The Point Lookout Civic Association gives you the opportunity to get involved. This event is FREE, so come and join us at the Rec Hall on July 10 from 6- 8:00 p.m. Look forward to seeing you then.
