Civic News: Winter 2004

POLAR BEAR SIGHTING IN THE POINT

As we all turn our thoughts and fantasies toward places warm, some 40 “odd” souls (many Civic Members) ventured into the Atlantic on Jan 1st. Organized by the McMahon and Eberhart Families to commemorate the memories of our loved one’s who perished on September 11. This small sacrifice was another example of our community’s selfless spirit and was a great way to forget the winter doldrums and celebrate life as we commence the New Year.

CIVIC OUTREACHES TO OFFICIALS: SAVE OUR BEACH!!

A letter writing campaign and petition has been sent to our Congressman Peter King and State Senator Dean Skelos requesting their assistance regarding nourishment for Civic Beach which has been ravaged the past few years by storms and erosion. Spearheaded by Civic Beach Chairman Gerry Ottavino, letters were sent to our respective representatives and a petition circulated at our General Civic Meeting in January requesting their offices to provide two avenues of assistance.

  • Secure funding and to direct the Army Corps of Engineers that as they commence the dredging of Jones Inlet; sand be directed for placement onto Civic Beach .The ACOE is scheduled to remove 400,000 cubic yards of sand to improve this major navigational channel. We are asking that when this project commences that the sand be directed to be placed onto Civic Beach and not deposited elsewhere.

  • The Long Beach Island Storm Damage Reduction Project has still not moved forward. This $85 million dollar initiative is designed to significantly rehabilitate 9 miles of shoreline from Point Lookout to Atlantic Beach with new jetties and sand replenishment. We have petitioned our representatives to continue to preserve this invaluable funding and to do all within their power to move this project off the drawing boards and into reality.

We have asked all Point Lookout Residents to lend their voice and to send individual letters to Cong. King and Sen. Skelos. If you require further information on how you can help, please check the Civic Bulletin Board nearest the Post Office, mypointlookoutcom

Or contact Gerry Ottavino or myself for more information.

CHALLENGE YOUR ASSESSMENT- DEADLINE MARCH 1ST

Our January meeting witnessed presentations by Jeff Gold of the Nassau County Board of Assessors and Tim McGloin of the Assessment Review Commission on how residents may properly challenge their assessment.  Information was provided that one may challenge their assessment without the need to hire attorney and challenges require no filing fee. We strongly encourage residents to do the following:

  • Ascertain what Cole- Layer – Trumble determined to be your property value.

(this figure was mailed to you in November. If you did not receive a letter go to mynassauproperty.com or call the Nassau Dept of Assessment 571-2391.

  • Determine if all the info regarding your property is correct. Lot size, square feet, rooms etc. If there is a difference please note on your application
  • Find out what comparison dwelling CLT compared your home with in order to establish your assessed value. If you need a copy of recent “comparables” please contact the Civic or our local realtors who will provide these to you free of charge. Some have suggested that you should enlist comparables from within our Long Beach School District . Your list of comparables may wish to encompass Lido and Long Beach homes in addition to homes in Point Lookout.
  • The Civic will strongly advocate that you challenge your assessment and familiarize yourself with the various exemptions: Senior, Veterans and the STAR exemptions are available. Be sure you are maximizing your entitlements. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Civic We hope to be at the Post Office the weekend before filing to address any questions and to offer assistance and provide applications.

ZONING ISSUES

The CIVIC continues to address and question the TOH Building Dept and Board of Zoning Appeals when matters of concern are brought to our attention. We have begun a process of posting on our bulletin board the Town of Hempstead Board of Appeal Hearings involving Point Lookout. The CIVIC appeared before the Board in December and we were directed by the Chairman that it greatly enhances the merits of a challenge to have a petitioning neighbor of the applicant present or to have submitted in writing to the Board their reason for objecting to the application. The Board felt that as meritorious as the Civics’ position maybe it’s case is stronger when a petitioning neighbor joins with the Civic and testifies in opposition.

We ask that you continue to bring matters to our attention involving matters before the Board or to make us aware of unauthorized construction on parcels without any noticeable building permits. We plan on inviting the Building Dept and a member of the Board of Variance again to a future Civic meeting, so please let us know your concerns.

SCHOLARSHIP FUND/BENCHES FOR OUR BEACH & PARKS

The Civic has long seen a need to establish a scholarship fund to provide a small monetary award to further one of our Point Lookout student’s higher education. We have begun a process of replacing all of the benches on Civic Beach , the ball field’s playground and the Cedarhurst Ave. Park . Civic Board Member Ted Van Erk thought it would be a good idea to solicit interested families or parties to “buy a bench” in memory of a loved one or family and the proceeds would be directed to this scholarship fund. Thus far four benches have been commissioned and we are offering to Point Lookout residents on a first come first serve basis reservations for one of these benches our hope is to generate enough interest to place orders to replace the approximately 12 old benches on Civic Beach in time for the opening of the 2004 Beach Season. If you have an interest in reserving one of these beach benches, please contact Ted Van Erk or myself.  You’ll be hearing more about this concept and scholarship fund at our next general meeting on March 4th.

HISTORIC CALENDAR/ MEMBERSHIP

By this time all residents should have received the 3rd edition of our historic calendar. Kudos need to be extended to Peter & Mary Healy, Rosemarie Dowling, Sue Marcote, Nan Newell and the members of the historical committee as well as the sponsors who contributed to underwriting part of the cost. Thank you for a job well done. Calendars were mailed to all residents as a small reminder of our halcyon days but as a gentle nudge to get involved in one of our many activities. Our current membership is approximately 430 families. Our goal for July is to enroll 500 families. If you are a member please get involved in one of our committees, if you’re not a member won’t you please consider joining. We have some additional calendars available, if you can recruit one new member to join the Civic, we would be happy to provide this beautiful calendar as a token of our appreciation.

KATE CAHILL

It is with sadness that join with countless others in mourning the passing of Kate Cahill. An extraordinary human being who improved the lives of everyone she met through her photography, her writings, and her indominatable spirit. Kate will be missed but never forgotten. We convey our thoughts and prayers to her husband Dr Kevin Cahill and to her family.
