On the Lookout

It may be too cold to hurry down to the beach anymore, but visitors to www.mypointlookout.com are guaranteed a good warm feeling if they go there online - particularly if they've ever lived in Point Lookout. Or still do.

Julie McTernan and Barb Fiorillo, former residents who spend summers there, launched the nonprofit site in May. "We both love the town and thought it would be interesting to bring both our perspectives to the site," said McTernan, 36, of Manhattan.

The community may be only 12 blocks long with perhaps 800 houses, she said, but its small-town feel has meant the world to McTernan and Fiorillo, 39, of Malverne.

"People come together here in good times and bad, so we wanted to try and figure out, with our technical expertise, how to capture this online without ruining it," McTernan said.

Beyond the colorful beach chairs seen onscreen are links to recent births and deaths, scheduled church dinners, civic meetings and holiday parties - and a sense of home. Because both women have worked in Web development jobs, building and maintaining the site themselves was easy, McTernan said.

"What was hard was convincing people in Point Lookout it was OK to let the world know our little town," she said.
