It was a pleasure to come across your Point Lookout website yesterday. My family owned a house on Inwood Avenue back in the 30s, 40s and part of the 50's. I remember spending summers there when I was very young and many weekends in the fall and spring  later on while helping to get the house ready for summer rentals. I fondly remember these days and often go out of my way to visit the Point and check it out. I'm glad that some people have been able to get trees to grow. I remember much about the early days including frequent sunburns, seeing Charles Atlas helping to remove large tree branches that littered the beach after a storm and wondering about the mysterious antennas on the Alan B. Dumont house. I much later learned that these were television antennas that were there to receive experimental transmissions from what later became WABD Channel 5 television station in NYC. I also happily recall the hamburger restaurant that was on the boulevard. If I am not mistaken, it was called Wimpy's after a character in the Popeye comics. Another vivid memory involves the times we walked north up to the bay side to see the giant turtle  when it came to visit.

e-mail from Devin Tammaro Miller, Point Resident

Hi my name is Devin and I live in Point Lookout.  During the beginning of the school year we were asked to write a paper about a place that is special to us.  I chose Point Lookout.  I hope you can get some joy out of reading my feelings about Point Lookout. Here is my paper:
                                                                        St. Joseph School
Devin Tammaro Miller                                                                                                        9/12/05
 Mrs. Keefe                                                                                                                         71-LA

                                                              My Beach House
My mom and I really like Point Lookout.  Many people have summer houses here.  We were in the middle of moving, and we wanted to find a nice, small house to stay in.  We were thinking of staying here just for the summer, but there was a rental that we could rent for a year.  So instead of coming here just for the summer, we wound up living here.  It is very special here for many different reasons.  I met many new friends on my block.  They are all in my age group.  Some are twelve, and some are ten.  It's very quiet and peaceful in Point Lookout, and you don't have to worry if you leave the door unlocked or your car open.  Everyone around here says, "Hi," to you, even if you don't know them.  All the girls are very kind and have made me feel like I fit in.  I am about one minute from the ocean, and a minute from tons of little shops that are just up the road.   There are really great restaurants that I can walk to, and a supermarket, post office, laundromat, and pharmacy.  If my mom needs something, I can just run right over and get it.  One of the best places here is a little restaurant called "Jo Jo Apples," which serves the best two eggs over easy with bacon I have ever had!  It is a very cool place to have breakfast or lunch, and they serve a great dinner, as well.
I feel very safe here.  Some people leave their bikes out in the front of their house, with no locks, all year round.  All the houses are right next to each other, so there's always someone outside to play with.  We walk to the beach almost every weekend, because it's right down the road.  All my new friends are always at the beach when I am, so I'm never lonely.  If you go onto the beach, you can see the inlet where the bay meets the ocean.  The beach is beautiful and extremely clean, unlike many other beaches.  There is an ice cream truck that always comes by called "Marybeth's" that has great ices, ice cream, drinks, and food.  When you step outside your house, you can smell the salt air of the ocean, which is a very good smell.
The post office is a place where people gather to socialize and get their mail because Point Lookout has no mail delivery.  Everyone knows each other, and they are extremely friendly.  There is a park farther down, and right next to the park are these huge rocks, called jetties, that are in the water.  They help prevent erosion, but sometimes we climb on them [even though we are not supposed to].  Right away, I felt welcomed, and at home.  Sometimes at night, my friend Jenna has a fire going outside, and her dad tells scary stories, while we toast marshmallows
At night it isn't noisy, so you can sleep in peace and quiet.  On Sunday mornings, we can hear the Church bells ring.  Almost everyone here has a dog or a cat, so while I'm walking my dogs, sometimes I see one of my friends walking theirs.  I can bike ride all over the town because my mom and I feel safe living here.
Point Lookout is very special to me, and I love it here.  This is my favorite place to be.  What could have been just for the summer, might last forever.

I hope you enjoyed reading it!  I am a 7th grader at St. Joseph School
Sincerely,

Hello,

My name is Peter Anthony Roland and I want to thank you for putting together this wonderful webpage! I love visiting "My Point Lookout.Com" http://www.mypointlookout.com/

My family lived (at) 66 Baldwin Avenue in the "Point," from the Summer of 1959 until the Winter of 1979 *Lets see if I can do the math? I celebrated my 54th Birthday this Summer, hmm. that would have placed me in Point Lookout from the age of 8 or 9, until the age of 28? Wow, it certainly seems like a life-time when you look at it that way.. doesn't it?
  Yours Truly,  around-1966
My Memories of Point Lookout,

I thought about enclosing my whole life story, (for you to post right here-!) My life-story would begin, the day I moved to Point Lookout, but there are too many memories to mention, without crying!

Moreover, My life-story would include all the wonderful friends I loved, (and hated) in Point Lookout, but, there are too many people to mention, and I am afraid I would forget to mention the one I miss the most, when I miss them ALL so terribly!

.. So I thought I would just say, if you remember me, and I hope you do, And, if you want to contact me.. and I hope you do,

PLEASE DO!

I can be reached by my web page http://www.geocities.com/paroland

Before I go, there is one person I must mention.. and even if you don't remember me,
I hope you were fortunate enough to remember my Mom! .. Marion Roland. You might remember my mother from "The Beauty Parlor" in the Point, where she worked in the early 60's? Or Perhaps you remember her from "The Oasis?" which she ran through the mid-60's? But if you don't remember "Marion," for anything else, you surely will remember my mom from the Bar she lovingly owned and operated from the 60's to the end of the 70's, "The Patio Bar and Grill," Today, mom (Marion) is doing great!
Marion celebrated her 80th Birthday last month, (November/2005)  Mom Lives quietly today in Jupiter, Florida with (Joe Roland) and her son (my brother) Robert Roland.

Yours Truly and Mom (Marion Roland) November/2005 Miami, Florida

P.S

I noticed Stephen Merola's story; "The Center of the Universe II" http://www.mypointlookout.com/Point_Memories/mypointlookoutcom__stephenmerola.htm
made mentioned of the old "Point Lookout T-Shirt?"
Well, I figured, "because, there may be one or two people -out there- that do not remember the "T-Shirt" that my old friend Steve was referring to, I thought I should send you a picture of one!"

Yours Truly.. wearing a 40+ Year-Old Point Lookout T-Shirt / December-2005

Thank You for re-creating (on the Web) a place known as "Point Lookout New York!" A place that used to only exist.. in my memories, and the memories of those of us who were fortunate enough to say, "I am from Point Lookout, New York!" Because of you, Point Lookout exists, and will continue to exist, and the memories will live on, and on.. and ON!

Hi, I'm Jack Fischer, perhaps you know my brother Adam and his wife Janice of Mineola Ave. I'm writing to make a suggestion for your Point Lookout web cam. I think it would be much more interesting if it was placed facing Point Lookout, not the bridge and marina. In fact it would be really great if it was near the traffic light, facing down Lido Boulevard towards the ball park. That way I can see what's happening! Anyway I enjoy the website from where I'm currently living - Flagstaff Arizona.

Thanks,

 Jack Fischer
Oh20yrs2go@aol.com

Thanks for your message Jack. We feel the same. Unfortunately we don't provide the camera. We tapped into a feed from LIShore that kept track of the beaches. We decided to send them an e-mail to see if we could at least get the beach camera up and running again and here was the response:

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your interest and concern. Our network connectivity at Point Lookout has been provided free by the Town of Hempstead, and it's their

802.11 wireless connection that is down. The ToH network administrator is officially their conservation biologist, he is way overloaded with work and his boss keeps assigning him to other tasks. During the summer I had some extra leverage because the connectivity was also used by ToH lifeguards, but they are now gone and my camera server is the only building tenant until spring.

Last time there was a problem like this it turned out someone on the mainland was swamping the 802.11 channel with an illegal power booster.

The fix then involved playing with channel settings to find a clear frequency. I don't have access to the ToH network to try a fix myself, besides which it's some kind of nightmare patched together with obsolete PCs running Linux-based router/firewall software, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole...

A real fix would be for me to install an EV-DO wireless card at the Point Lookout server, it would provide cable modem speeds and no interference.

Unfortunately I'm running LIshore on fumes right now and the EV-DO service alone costs about $85 per month, plus installation and maintenance costs.

I have made a proposal to ToH to pay for this service, it would fix both my and their connectivity problems. Hopefully I will get an answer to this sometime in the next month, otherwise if you know an individual or organization that would be interested in making a tax-deductible contribution, let me know.

As you can probably tell, I'm kind of frustrated by the lack of progress on this issue. I'm using the email traffic I get to show Hempstead that the camera service is badly missed. Cross your fingers, keep checking in, and thanks a lot for your interest in LIShore!

Best regards,

Tom Wilson

Hi, Mr. Ryan, what a great site you have.  I lived in Long Beach from 1962 through 1978 and have many fond memories of LB and Point Lookout.  Anyway, I noticed you referenced your friend Artie Voigt.  I attended LBHS from '62-'64 with my friend Paula Morrissey.  We remained friends after HS but took separate paths some years later.  The last I remember talking with Paula she was seeing a man named Artie Voigt.  Some time later I heard that she had married him.

I'd love to touch base with Paula if she is Paula Voigt, nee Morrissey.  As I recall, Paula had a brother, Murray.
Would you be willing to check with your friend Artie to see if I have the right person, and if so, offer my e-mail address to Paula in case she would also like to touch base?

My e-mail address is:
gannw@ncleg.net.
If this is the same Paula she will remember me (I hope) as Georg- Watson.  While we were at LBHS I lived on Shore Road and she lived on E. Broadway.

If you cannot make this connection, no problem.  But if you can and are willing, I would be most appreciative.
I have no hidden agenda here, just to electronically reminisce with a friend I loved and respected.
Thanks,
Gann (Georg-Ann) Watson

Hi Julie,

I hope I'm sending this to the correct address.  Again, I appreciate what you are doing to bring Point Lookout back to all of us who lived there at one time.

About a week ago I received an email from someone  with a last name of Gibbons.  He said he was also a former resident of Pt. Lookout, and now living in Calgary Canada.  He had read my article about my years in Pt. Lookout, and was so interested in the fact that I said we lived right behind Charles Atlas and family.  He said he was a great admirer of Charles Atlas for years, and was asking if I could give him stories I might remember about Charles Atlas.

Today I was about to respond to him when my computer just went beserk, and I totally lost his email, with his address, and therefore could not respond to him.----and somehow I just am not able to retreive it.  So Julie if you could just post something on your website directed to him and give my email address again I would be so grateful.  I do not want him to think I ignored his request.  It's just so great keeping in touch with "Point Lookouters", and bringing Point Lookout back into my life!!

I also have finally dug up some pictures of the house we lived in at 140 Inwood Ave.  I will send them soon.
If you receive this message would you please let me know.  Thanks loads.

What I great way to keep in contact with Point Lookout!!  Growing up we had had a home at 140 Inwood Ave.. I am Marie (Aprile) Galante  We lived there from 1935 to  just after the end of WWII  Those were the years when the Point was just great.  The beach was wide---no erosion yet,----- and we could walk from the bottom of our street on the beach completely to the bay.  There were no barriers, no boulders in the water----just beach and sand.  Ours was the last street when we first moved there, and right behind our house were the sand dunes for as far as one could see..  We could see Jones Beach right across the inlet.  In fact we always enjoyed the fireworks from there.   Then the sand dunes were removed, and two streets were built behind us, and eventually the beach suffered severe erosion.   Charles Atlas and family lived right behind us when that street was built.

During the war ( I was just a teenager) the coast guard station was activated, and all the girls in town hung around there and talked to the servicemen when they were off duty. The coast guard tower where a coast guardsman  was on duty 24 hours a day for beach patrol was  also just behind our house. I don't think either of those is still there.  Also every night 2 of the coast guards  with dogs, walked the beach for several miles on patrol.  We felt very safe and secure with the Coast Guard right in our midst.  Does anyone out there remember those years?

I have so many wonderful and fond memories of those years we lived there.  And it still is a very special memory in my life.  My best friend was Jo (Scalaro) Calcagno, and knew her family well, and we remained good friends until Jo sadly passed away 6 years ago.  When she married she and Hank bought a house on Garden City Ave., and every summer I went to Point  Lookout to visit. even though I now live in Florida.  I'm still friends with Jo's sister Flavia, and we're always in contact and see each other  at least once a year.

I have pictures of our house when we lived there---next door to the Weirs and the Mastronardis---and I'll be glad to send them.    And spending all those summers at Point Lookout was one of the most  memorable times in my life.  Will look for this account of my memory of Point  Lookout on you website.  And I sure would love to hear from the folks who  now live at 140 Inwood Ave where so much of my fond memories still remain.

My name is Erin Vickers (nee Manning). My family and I moved to Point Lookout when I was 6 and I lived there until I was 26, and my Mom, Kathy, and my sister Julia still live there. I get a big kick out of reading about The Point on the website and check the beach cam about once a week and save the image as my screen saver to remind me of home! Eight years ago I moved to England with my husband Stephen and now work as a solicitor (lawyer).

Last week my husband and I were meeting some friends in a pub in Leicester to watch the football (soccer to you Yanks!) and while we were making our way to a table, I spotted a chap on his way out the door - wearing an Olive Oil's t-shirt! I squeezed my way over to him and had to ask about it. He told me that he had bought it the summer before when he was visiting a "mate" who lived in The Point. Unfortunately his friends were leaving and he had to go, otherwise I would have questioned him more thoroughly about it!

I understand that Olive Oil's is the creation of Tommy Corning. Tommy and his sister Danielle and I were at school together, so it was especially great seeing this t-shirt 6,000 miles away from Point Lookout! Tommy, keep printing the t-shirts, they are fantastic advertising! How about sending me one so I can keep spreading the good word!

To whom it may concern,

My extended family resided in Pt Lookout for many decades. My great grandma Dottie Grant was a waitress there and a local character. Her youngest son Georgie served as a Volunteer FF in town and lost his life during a fire in March of 1980. A memorial sat outside the Ye old Firehouse for many years. I have not been there for the last five, so I can only assume it still does. No matter what anyone might have to say about the wacky Grants, no one has ever said anything but the best about George. He was a great man and taken from us far too young
While I enjoyed your site, I feel it is missing a memorial section to honor the fallen Fire Fighters, Policemen and War Heroes. I know there were more than my uncle. I think people need to remember those who gave their lives. Please consider including a section on this. Maybe even a section on the PT's Fire Dept. It has always been a very important part of life there. If I can help or provide you with any information, please let me know. I have newspaper articles as well as video tape of the ceremony giving my Great Grandmother her sons flag and plaque. It was very nice to see someone take the time to preserve the history of a town I spent so much time growing up in.
 Sincerely,

Great Niece of Marge, Michael, James, Martie, Joanie and George Grant
Niece of Dolores Angel, Maggie Eberhart and Tommy Conaty

Dear Christina,

We'd love to have a memorial section dedicated to honor our fallen Point hero's. Please forward any info you have and we'd be happy to create a section.

My father built his Point home in 1929, (the year of my birth) on Ocean Blvd. We used it as a summer home until he winterized it about 1948 and had to move it to 105 Parkside because of beach erosion. I haven't lived there since my mother's death in 1994. My wife Carol and I have recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. We have lived in the Crestwood section of Yonkers for the past 42 years  and have 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren!

Julie,

Pete's was located on Ocean Blvd between Baldwin Ave and Bellmore Ave. I took the picture from in front of my father's house which was adjacent to the lot on Bellmore. I would guess the picture was taken in the late 30's. Perhaps someone with a knowledge of "vintage" cars can better estimate the year. Because of severe beach erosion Pete's was washed away, and the house was moved to 105 Parkside Drive. It has been since remodeled by the new owner.

On a recent flight to Florida with my three sons my theory that Point Lookout is the center of the universe was reconfirmed when a humongous man made his way to the last seat in the last row of the plane which happened to be next to me.  As he approached all I could think to myself was "no, please don't tell me he's in this row..." The closer he got the more I realized that I knew this face. How could I not? This was no ordinary giant, this was Joe Klecko, former NY Jet, member of the infamous "sack-exchange", Hall of Famer, and most importantly Point Lookout resident for several seasons during the early 80's. I was too nervous to initially speak to him as a flood of memories came rushing in. I was about 16 and vividly remember working the check-out counter in Merola's while the likes of Joe Klecko, Richard Todd, Pat Leahy, etc. would come barreling through larger than life. When I wasn't going to school or at Merola's  I was babysitting and remember clearly watching the Klecko's sons one Sunday afternoon. The plane was now landing and I was wondering how I'd get the courage up to speak to him and decided what the heck. I waited for him to awaken (he slept the whole trip, another reason I couldn't speak to him...Joe, wake up remember me from Merola's???). He started to stir as the announcements came over the loudspeaker. I got my boys organized and then turned and said "Excuse me, I'm sorry to bother you, are you Joe Klecko?" He said yes and knowing that I had only minutes to spare I launched into Pt. Lookout, Merola's, babysitting for his boys (one of whom he was going to see play in the super bowl) commenting on how I had seen them retire his number last year, etc. He seemed a bit taken back.  Here is plane full of people and a mom with three young children at her side is the one who recognizes him. Of course he remembered Pt. Lookout, Chicolinos, his wife loved the IGA, he said he had many nice memories of the town. I asked if he wouldn't mind taking a picture with my three boys. One by one I introduced them to this man who I told them was a great football legend and had lived in Pt. Lookout once. I thanked him and he commented on what a small world it was that he'd have to tell his wife that he met me. I continued to beam as I gathered the boys together. The stewardess asked me who that guy was, was he some kind of celebrity. I told her who he was and her puzzled expression quickly vanished as did her interest.  I smiled and thought to myself...in one small town many many miles away, many many years ago, you didn't get much bigger...

The Point is truly a blessed place.  I just wanted to share some history and good charma regarding our special little town. It all started with the childhood summers where freinds, beach, baseball, and bodysurfing made every day a holiday.

After living in New Orleans throughout the formitive years, the opportunity arose, thanks to Mom and Pop and a "rumble" with my brother, of being handed a key and told to "go to Point Lookout and give life time to unfold."  Living in the Point year round experiencing the peace, tranquility, and beauty of all four seasons was truly a blessing.

Then came a twist of fate having to move out of the Point for five years, but, through the grace of God, good freinds, and good credit being able to purchase our own home and return in October 2004.

Let me tell you this - when you have to leave this beautiful place and then are able to return - you appreciate it more than ever.

Come on Summer!

God Bless Point Lookout

This weekend- 6 cars were parked on Ocean ave. We watched people park & walk right on to the beach. No one seemed concerned about a ticket at all.... Who should I contact? This problem seems to be getting worst.

Margaret,

We forwarded your note to the head of the Civic Association who should be following up with you. Several townspeople have complained about the situation as have expressed concern about the possible damage it might be doing to the dunes. If anyone has an opinion or suggestions on this please contact us at info@mypointlookout.com. Thanks Margaret for bringing it to everyone's attention.

e-mail from Robert Nolan, visitor to the Point

Hello,

I have visited the Bayside Drive restaurants in the past by car, but was wondering if there were any public dock spaces I could use if I wanted to come by boat.  I was told that there was no docking allowed in front of The Buoy Bar, and only customers of The Fisherman's Catch could tie up at their dock.  Am I out of luck?

Robert - Sorry to tell you that you are out of luck when it comes to finding a public dock by the bay. There are no public dock spaces there.

I'll Always Remember
The spectacular skies from the loop coming round...
The warmth of the friends on
Mineola I've found
The joy of lots o children
playing on the street.
The "Catch," the duck race, fireworks at TED'S .....
'Scary Blue Angels
Over our head.
The Easter egg hunt, the Halloween Parade....
The wonderful friends that Rebecca has made.....
The beautiful grotto, the church and the REC.....
A sunset evening on Buoy Bar's Deck
Hannah's wonderful care, MaryBeth's ring, The biggest PO box for every little thing.
The Communion of angels that touched our hearts. The procession of wagons and carts.
No power on Bob's birthday on the beach,
IGA'S hero's at 5.99 each
Breakfast at JoJo's
After school at the park...
So much of this place has left its mark.
The beach, the views the summer so sweet...
And to walk to it all could not be beat.
I've expressed some thoughts and surely left some out.....
But of this I have no doubt.....
It's a lovely town that runs deep....
And will always be in my memories, both bitter and sweet.

Hi.  My name is Laura Hetterick, and I lived at 94 Garden City Avenue for 30 years.  I just found out about this website and think it’s great.  I have lots of great memories of Point Lookout.  I’m currently living in Tampa, FL.  Even though I’m in Florida, I actually have to drive to the beach instead of just walking down the block!  I miss our great beach!  Anyway, keep up the great work with the website.

grettings from beautiful ponte verdra beach florida. you would be suprised how similar this area is to the point... geographically that is actually it is what drew us here. We Mahoney's are all coming together to celebrate our uncle (Father John Mahoney of the Oblate order in Japan for the past 50 years) this July. So we are putting out our feelers in the Point to see if any one would be interested in renting us their home for three weeks in July. Looking forward to seeing everyone and having an english muffin and a coke at Pavlicks.

Just a quick note to say Happy Holidays to everyone in PL.

I was out to visit in Oct. 2002, while at the Fire Fighters Memorial at Madison Square Garden. I got to visit the Fire Station in PL. Wonderful bunch of people. Also got to meet Richard Amen and his family along with several other people from Mineola. Always check into the PL web site and see what is going on. Love to look at the live cam from the beach.

Thanks again to everyone in PL

Hello and Merry Christmas
Just a note to add my name to the list of folks who appreciate your web site. I still visit when I can since I have so many family members who still live at the Point either in the summer or all year long. My sister in law is a "Beach Bridge Biddie". I have wonderful memories growing up in Point Lookout at 61 Freeport Avenue. I now live in Surfside Beach SC near the ocean - I can not be without. A recent letter in your post office has reunited me ( by e-mail) with Tony DeDomenico, a cousin I haven't seen in years and used to baby-sit for a long time ago. If anyone would like to see photo's of me and my brothers Jack and Nick Muratori they can visit my family website at http://home.earthlink.net/~sixfairway/. Thanks for listening and keep up the good works.

Hey there,
I was reading the emails on your site and although I don't remember many of the names I do have many fond memories of my days in Point lookout.  My family moved to the Point in 1955 or 56, we lived at 89 Hewlett Ave.  Eventually I think we became the largest year round family in town with 9 children including a set of triplet boys.  I could go on for ever with memories but here are a few that those of you that were year round residents might recall.  How about the bus ride home on the last day of school from LBCS, tearing up our shirts and singing John Jacob Jingle Himer Schmidt.  Playing football every day after school on the grass at TOH park.  Mike Mahoney, Vernon Ritter and Toby Cullen lip sinking "Twist and Shout" at the rec hall talent show, in white clam diggers, and going to Jans in Long Beach for ice cream afterwards. Playing ring-a-levio starting at the Robinson's house and the boundries seemed to be the entire town. Making forts out of Christmas trees in the lot across from the Manning's on Beech Street.  The memories just keep on coming but I've got to go.  Thanks for the venue to share these memories plus many more, I'll continue to check out the site whenever I need a Point fix and share more memories.

I am a former resident, and oftime visitor to Pt. Lookout for 23 years.  While your site is very nice to look at, you very rarely mention your fire department.  Even in your 4th of July 2003 parade, you didn't even MENTION the fire dept's involvement!!!!  Tell me, who hosts the bbq each year?  Where are some pictures???  This is such a terrible disappointment to me since you don't seem to support your brave men and women who keep your homes safe everyday, my daughter Shana being one of them.

Please consider addressing this ommision because, quite frankly, I think it's shameful.

Candee  Heller  (formally a Guerin)

Ms. Heller - We're sorry about your disappointment & confusion over our site.  MyPointLookout.com is all about people contributing and we are grateful to Chas Thompson, Roland Donohue, Don Kelly, Barbara Collins, Suzanne Torpey Parnell and many others who have contributed information about our esteemed Point Lookout-Lido Fire Dept. over the past two and a half years. We post everything we get and whole heartedly support our Fire Department. Perhaps you could send a piece on your daughter, a memory from your last 23 years here or some photos you may have of the Fire Department and we will be glad to post them.

Hi Julie,

I was wondering if you could include this picture for heritage day.  My brother Danny, sister Sharyn, and myself accepted the plaque for my dad.  It was a wonderful, yet sad day as I know my dad would loved to have been there.  The standing ovation for the "Old Timers"  was well deserved and it was very emotional for all of us.

           Thanks,   Suzanne Parnell

Suzanne,

Thanks for sharing this picture with us! Your parents were great people and will always be remembered fondly in Point Lookout history!

hey from new orleans. I hope you are enjoying some pleasant weather as i find my self slinking out of the heat of the day here. I have some troubling news to report. A table was left on the lawn of my house as i was packing for school. the table was taken from right off the lawn. I am sure someone thought it might have been out for the trash... it was pretty old and rickety. rectangular 4 person, wooden, with two leaves allowing it to seat 6- there is also a small draw with a rectangular clear knob which has come loose of the table frame. I was rather fond of the table and would love if you could maybe post an attention notice on your sight. much appreciation-working on a project entitled "the many uses of algae"- maybe it will help alleviate some of our seaweed trouble.

e-mail from Debbie (Hogan) Albert, former resident

Hi there;

I just came across this site, and I really enjoy it.

My family moved to Point Lookout in the early 1960's when I was just a toddler. We first lived at 44 Lido Blvd., but shortly after moved to 1A Lido Blvd., on top of the deli. I remember the beautiful marina across the street, and also the community center, where I went to nursery school.

I don't remember many people from Point Lookout, but some names I do remember are Marissa Tomassi, Dorothy Hetterick, Portia Hetterich, Kathleen Waldorf, The Claytons and Anne Gilbert.

I also clearly remember the beautiful beach and also the playground at the end of the town, where we used to go for Fourth of July fireworks. Behind our apartment building was Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal church, that we attended.

I attended school first in Lido, and later in Long Beach.

My mother, sister and brother left Point Lookout in October 1969, after my father died. We moved back to Canada, where my mother was from.

Next Wednesday, my brother, sister-in-law, husband and I are leaving for a visit in New York and CT. We will be visiting in Point Lookout on Friday, July 25th, and I can hardly wait.

Anyway, I just thought I would drop a note to say that I loved Point Lookout while we were there, and I am truly looking forward to visiting there again.

Sincerely

Debbie (Hogan) Albert

Saw your website and had to write. I lived at the Point during the summers from 1944 to 1956 and then all year round until @1972. Went to Lido Elementary and the Long Beach High. My mom lived there a few years longer and then sold the house at 56 Inwood Ave and moved to Florida.

It was nice to see the town again.

Thanks,
Tony

An Easter Poem About Us

Point Lookout TRIDUUM 2002

1.  Children’s Good Friday

A pale boy playing Christ has a new haircut,
the untroubled forehead and gentle mouth
of a child in a painting by Mary Cassatt.
Wrapped in purple weave, he daydreams God,
innocent of any neighborhood  lore
stumbling to Golgotha under a papier
mache
cross.  At the fall, his mother startles
before remembering help is the Cyrene’s part.
After the fourteenth station, six little
dancers twirl with uplifted arms as our hero
returns in white tunic and forsythia crown.
The cast subdued by suffering take chaste
bows. Charmed adults applauding each child
by name, are distanced from a gravitas of pain.

2. What the Fisherman Said

A fisherman says Lady, go home, wind’s raw
today.  Seagulls flew inland
. I barely hear
above a rip tide’s bellow, white foam
lathering sea jetties, stone and shore.

The ocean at Point Lookout runs wild
as if some daimon churns Holy Saturday
into the Creeds’s dire report: Christ died
Was buried.
Is that nether world erupting
our Atlantic? And where did that fisherman go?
